  • Description

Pilot Ladder

  • Pilot Ladder is a specialized rope ladder used to safely transfer maritime pilots between a ship and a pilot boat or other vessels. The ladder typically consists of wooden or synthetic steps (treads) held in place by vertical ropes, known as side ropes.

  • It is designed to be strong and stable to allow the pilot to board or disembark a vessel under various conditions at sea.

  • If the point of access from sea level is more than 9 meters, a combination ladder should be used. A combination ladder is a conjunction of the pilot ladder and accommodation ladder. This is a common arrangement found on vessels with high freeboard.

  • The accommodation ladder is rigged in such a way that it leads aft of the vessel and has a slope angle of not more than 55 degrees.

  • Key features of a pilot ladder :

    • Construction : Made of sturdy, non-slip treads spaced evenly along the ropes, with spreaders placed periodically to prevent the ladder from twisting.

    • Height : The height of the ladder is adjusted depending on the size of the ship and sea conditions. The bottom step should always be resting just above the water's surface.

    • Safety Measures : Ships must follow the International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards, which dictate how the ladder should be rigged, how it should be secured, and when it must be used.

    • Use : The ladder is primarily used in ports, near harbor entries, or when ships are offshore and require a maritime pilot to assist with navigation. Pilots use this to board large ships for guidance, especially in congested waters.
